The entry and residence regulations for international students and scholars can be very different depending on the country you come from. You should therefore be sure to find out in good time what requirements and deadlines apply for you. You can get reliable and up-to-date information on this matter with the Federal Foreign Office as well as on the website of the City of Munich. There are also two private websites which offer a lot of information on this topic (no liability for third-party content):
www.germany-visa.org/student-visa/ *
and
www.studying-in-germany.org/german-student-visa/ *.

Further important information about everything you need to know about coming to Germany to study or do research can be found at the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD, Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), or directly on this leaflet (as of January 2017) providing "Information on the legal framework conditions for Immigration and Residence of foreign students and scholars".
Information regarding proof of financing can be found here.
