How to contact us

You can contact us by phone to arrange an appointment for a psychological consultation. We exclusively work with fixed appointments.

Appointments can also be held on the phone or via video call. In this case it is necessary that you are located in Germany at the time of the appointment. For in-person consultation, please come with FFP2 mask. If you have any symptoms of having a cold, we do kindly ask you not to come in person. We will then offer you the consultation by video.

We urgently ask you to cancel appointments should you not be able to keep them so that we can hand them on to students seeking advice!

FAQs Psychotherapeutic and Psychosocial Counselling Service

Do you still offer personal counselling in the center?

We make every effort to offer you a personal consultation in our counselling centre. Please bring a FFP2 mask when you attend the consultation. If you have cold or flu symptoms at the time of your appointment, please be sure to switch to video or phone consultations. We will then reschedule accordingly for you. As soon as you are completely well again, you are welcome to attend the follow-up meetings on site at the counselling centre. Please understand that we may have to reschedule appointments if you do not follow the rules. Should a counsellor spontaneously develop symptoms, we may also have to switch to video or telephone at short notice. You will find our latest registration dates and phone number in the contact details.

Who works at the Psychotherapeutic and Psychosocial Counselling Service?

The people working at our Psychotherapeutic and Psychosocial Counselling Service are clinical psychologists who continued their education to become psychotherapists or who are about to take their final examinations as psychological psychotherapists.

How roughly does the counselling work?

To ensure that we have enough time and room for our students seeking advice, we exclusively work with fixed appointments. On average, we can offer three 50-minute consultations per case. Our counselling can also be carried out anonymously; we do not require a health insurance card. We always start off by listening to your problems and then try and sort the situation together. The next step is to look for possible solutions so that the people seeking advice once again experience themselves as capable of acting and are able to find new hope. An important part of our work is to offer our professional opinion whether the problem you are experiencing is pathological or not. In the case of a pathological disorder, we would offer some advice on how to receive further support as quickly as possible and which support services would be best suited. This could be, for instance, outpatient psychotherapy.

Apart from individual consultations, our advisory service includes couples and family consultations as well as talks and group offers.

Who will be aware of the fact that I used the counselling service?

Our psychological-psychotherapeutic counselling team is strictly bound to maintain confidentiality. Your health insurance, your university or other offices at the Student Union will definitely not learn about the fact that you used our counselling service. Only at your specific request, will data be passed on.

What waiting period should I be expecting?

You should be prepared to having to wait for two to four weeks for an initial consultation. We arrange appointments again starting from February 13th 2023. Subsequent appointments can then be made at short notice. Contact details of other places to turn to can be found here.

Will there be any costs?

Our advisory service is, of course, free of charge for all students who have paid the Student Union fee.

I am an international student. Do you also offer other languages apart from German?

At the moment, we can offer our consultations in German, English and French.

Can I also use your counselling service if I am currently not at my place of study?

Generally, we are specialists for the services provided at your place of study. Should you, for instance, be spending the entire semester abroad, we cannot offer sufficient advice from a professional point of view. In this case, we urgently advise you to look for suitable places to turn to where you are staying at the minute. Talk to your doctor.

Can you help me to get an appointment for therapy?

Finding suitable therapy needs time and strength. Often, you will have to contact several psychotherapists and will have to wait a couple of weeks or even months for your first appointment. We will support you as best we can by explaining everything in detail, providing you with tips and handing on our knowledge about the services available in Munich and Upper Bavaria. We are also glad to pass on information about the various different psychotherapeutic treatment opportunities that exist and talk about which treatment could be well-suited for your needs. For instance, following therapies are accepted by public health insurance in Germany at the moment: Analytic psychotherapy, systemic therapy, psychotherapy founded on the principles of depth psychology and behavioural therapy. Organizing an appointment for therapy, however, is not part of our job.

Can I get psychotherapy at the Psychotherapeutic and Psychosocial Counselling Service?

Psychotherapy means treating psychological disorders that are of clinical significance. As part of the German health system, this treatment – depending on the type of therapy – is offered to an extent of 12 to 300 hours. Our Counselling Service is not intended to offer this type of treatment. We are very happy to support you with the first steps to finding a solution to your problem.

Where can I start looking in order to get an appointment for outpatient psychotherapy?

You could, for instance, start by finding out about the services offered by the “Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Bayerns” (KVB / association of statutory health insurance physicians in Bavaria): https://www.kvb.de/service/patienten/psychotherapeutische-versorgung/

Or use the online search screen of the KVB: https://dienste.kvb.de/arztsuche/app/einfacheSuche.htm

This type of service is naturally also offered by the other federal states’ associations of statutory health insurance physicians: https://www.kbv.de/html/arztsuche.php

Portals such as the platform www.therapie.de also offer the possibility of searching online.

Another possibility is contacting Munich institutes offering further education in the area of psychotherapy. These institutes offer psychotherapy with experienced psychologists at the end of their training to becoming psychotherapist. Institutes such as these would be – with no guarantee of completeness: Münchner Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Psychoanalyse e.V. - MAP, Akademie für Psychoanalyse und Psychotherapie München e.V., Kirinus, Institut für Therapieforschung (IFT), Münchner Universitäres Institut für Psychologische Psychotherapieausbildung (MUNIP), Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Verhaltensmodifikation (AVM), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Verhaltenstherapie (DGVT), Ärztlich-Psychologischer Weiterbildungskreis für Psychotherapie und Psychoanalyse (ÄPK), Verein zur Förderung der klinischen Verhaltenstherapie (vfkv e.V.), Alfred Adler Institut für Individualpsychologie, C. G. Jung-Institut München e. V., Lehrinstitut für Psychotherapie und Psychoanalyse München gGmbh (LPM), Münchner Lehr- und Forschungsinstitut (LFI) der Deutschen Akademie für Psychoanalyse (DAP), Institut für Psychotherapie am kbo-Isar-Amper-Klinikum Haar, AsysTH-Ausbildungsinstitut für systemische Psychotherapie…

I would like to get some counselling via email. Is that possible?

That is unfortunately not possible due to data protection regulations. We would advise you to always be very cautious when providing personal information in emails!

My seminar paper is supposed to be about a psychological topic. Can you support me with this?

Please understand that due to the high demand for appointments, we would like to make our resources available for student counselling. For reasons of fairness, we are also unable to answer individual enquiries.
