Social Skills Training

Do you know the feeling
...that you’re not sure of how to approach others?
...that you can't stand up for your needs?
...that you have difficulties setting boundaries?
...that others perceive you as aggressive?

Many people experience these insecurities in social situations. However, it is important for your own mental health to be able to find an adequate compromise between your own needs and those of the other person when interacting socially. The training aims to use psychotherapeutic techniques to enhance your social skills within a group and practice them actively for everyday situations.

Dates: 7 group sessions of 90 minutes each on Wednesdays (8.5., 15.5., 29.5., 5.6., 12.6., 19.6., 26.6.2024) from 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Cost: 30 euros

If you are interested, please arrange an initial meeting to take place in person or by phone during the opening hours of our office. The deadline for registering is 2nd May 2024.

Please note that both groups will be held in German!

How to contact us

You can contact us by phone to arrange an appointment for a psychological consultation. We exclusively work with fixed appointments.

Appointments can also be held on the phone or via video call. In this case it is necessary that you are located in Germany at the time of the appointment. Should you be showing any symptoms of a cold, we ask you not to come by personally. In that case, we provide our counselling and advisory services via video call or on the phone.

We urgently ask you to cancel appointments should you not be able to keep them so that we can hand them on to students seeking advice!

FAQs Psychotherapeutic and Psychosocial Counselling Service

Who works at the Psychotherapeutic and Psychosocial Counselling Service?

The people working at our Psychotherapeutic and Psychosocial Counselling Service are clinical psychologists who continued their education to become psychotherapists or who are about to take their final examinations as psychological psychotherapists.

How roughly does the counselling work?

To ensure that we have enough time and room for our students seeking advice, we exclusively work with fixed appointments. On average, we can offer three 50-minute consultations per case. Our counselling can also be carried out anonymously; we do not require a health insurance card. We always start off by listening to your problems and then try and sort the situation together. The next step is to look for possible solutions so that the people seeking advice once again experience themselves as capable of acting and are able to find new hope. An important part of our work is to offer our professional opinion whether the problem you are experiencing is pathological or not. In the case of a pathological disorder, we would provide information on how to receive further support as quickly as possible and which support services would be best suited. This could be, for instance, outpatient psychotherapy.

Apart from individual consultations, our counselling service includes couples and family consultations as well as talks and group offers.

Who could find out that I used the counselling service?

Our psychological-psychotherapeutic counselling team is strictly bound to maintain confidentiality. Your health insurance, your university or other offices at the Studierendenwerk will definitely not learn about the fact that you used our counselling service. Only at your specific request, will data be passed on.

What waiting period should I be expecting?

You should be prepared to having to wait for approximately three weeks for an initial consultation. At the moment, we are handing out appointments from the 26th of March 2024 onwards. Follow-up appointments can then be made at short notice. Contact details of other places to turn to can be found here.

Do you charge for your service?

Our advisory service is, of course, free of charge for all students who have paid the Studierendenwerk fee.

I'm an international student. Do you also offer your service in other languages than German?

At the moment, we can offer our consultations in German and English.

Can I also use your counselling service if I am currently not at my place of study?

In general, we are specialists for the services provided at your place of study. Should you, for instance, be spending the entire semester abroad, we cannot offer sufficient advice from a professional point of view. In this case, we urgently advise you to look for suitable places to turn to where you are staying at the minute. Perhaps talk to your doctor.

The “Telefonseelsorge” offers a list of international help lines: https://www.telefonseelsorge.de/international-helplines/

Can you help me to get an appointment for therapy?

Finding suitable therapy requires time and strength. Often, you will have to contact several psychotherapists and will have to wait a couple of weeks or even months for your first appointment. We will support you as best we can by explaining everything in detail, offering tips and handing on our knowledge about the services available in Munich and Upper Bavaria. We are also glad to pass on information about the various different psychotherapeutic treatment opportunities that exist and talk about which treatment could be well-suited for your needs. For instance, following therapies are accepted by public health insurance in Germany at the moment: Analytic psychotherapy, systemic therapy, psychotherapy founded on the principles of depth psychology and behavioural therapy. Organizing an appointment for therapy, however, is not part of our job.

Can I get psychotherapy at the Psychotherapeutic and Psychosocial Counselling Service?

Psychotherapy means treating psychological disorders that are of clinical significance. As part of the German health system, this treatment – depending on the type of therapy – is offered to an extent of 12 to 300 hours. Our Counselling Service is not intended to offer this type of treatment. We are very happy to support you with the first steps to finding a solution to your problem.

Where can I start looking in order to get an appointment for outpatient psychotherapy?

You could, for instance, start by finding out about the services offered by the “Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Bayerns” (KVB / association of statutory health insurance physicians in Bavaria): https://www.kvb.de/service/patienten/psychotherapeutische-versorgung/

Or use the online search screen of the KVB: https://dienste.kvb.de/arztsuche/app/einfacheSuche.htm

The PTK (Psychotherapeutenkammer) also offers a search mask: https://www.ptk-bayern.de/ptk/web.nsf/id/pa_psychotherapeuten-suche.html

This type of service is naturally also offered by the other federal states’ associations of statutory health insurance physicians: https://www.kbv.de/html/arztsuche.php

Portals such as the platform www.therapie.de also offer the possibility of searching online.

That is unfortunately not possible due to data protection regulations. We would advise you to always be very cautious when providing personal information in emails!

My seminar paper is going to deal with a psychological topic. Can you support me in the process?

Please understand that due to the high demand for appointments, we would like to keep our resources available for student counselling. For the sake of fairness, it’s also not possible for us to answer individual enquiries.

Who can I turn to if I'm experiencing a crisis?
