DSW brochure

The German National Association for Student Affairs (DSW) has published a German brochure called “Studium und Behinderung” (Eng. studying and disability) containing information for students with a disability or chronic illness. The information provided includes all important aspects regarding issues such as being admitted to a course of studies, health insurance, financing your studies, organising technical support and people to assist you, compensation of disadvantages for taking exams, assistance and aids, etc.

Services provided by the universities

Universities in Munich

The large universities in Munich offer individual advisory services as well as special assistance for students with a disability or chronic illness.

Universities outside Munich

Students with a disability or chronic illness can turn to the general advisory services for information on the individual advice and assistance available.

IBS

The IBS is an association of students with and without disabilities and was formed in autumn 2004 from a student initiative at the LMU:

The IBS stands up for improving study conditions for students with a disability or chronic illness. It offers a forum for discussing issues with other students, functions as a place to turn to and also represents the students’ interests in front of the universities’ administration.

In order to enable these goals, two meetings take place each semester – the dates are always announced at the beginning of the semester.  At these meetings, you can discuss current issues and problems regarding studying at the LMU with a disability. Students share information, tips and advice with each other and talk about the experience they have made in their everyday student life. Naturally, these meetings also offer an opportunity to personally talk to other students.

Arbeitsgemeinschaft lebenslanges Lernen

Fully accessible offers at German universities as well as the opportunities available to further your education have improved during the past years; but the fact remains that people with a disability are still far too often confronted by challenges that cannot be overcome. For this reason, the organisation “Arbeitsgemeinschaft lebenslanges Lernen” (Eng. association for lifelong studying) has addressed this issue and has created a German guide on the subject, which you can have a look at here.
