The universities are responsible for research and education - the Studentenwerke, such as the Munich Student Union, are there to support students in Germany in economic, social, cultural and health matters.

The Munich Student Union is a public institution and, according to Bavarian university regulations, is responsible for

''...the economic and social support and assistance of students studying at state universities, in particular by setting up and running childcare centres, constructing and running student halls of residence and running gastronomic services, as well as providing access to institutions active in cultural and social areas. By carrying out their duties, the Studentenwerke should contribute to promote international relationships'.’

With a staff amounting to roughly 550 employees, the Munich Student Union looks after more than 132,000 students who are studying at the universities in Munich, Garching, Freising, Rosenheim, Burghausen, Mühldorf a. Inn, Traunstein and Benediktbeuern.
