The German law on heating cost subsidies came into force on 1st June

  • Categories: Finances
  • Date:

The German Bundestag had already agreed on a one-off subsidy for heating costs in March 2022, for citizens who receive housing benefit. The law on heating cost subsidies (“Heizkostenzuschussgesetz”, HeizkZuschG) then came into force on 1st June 2022.

According to the law, BAföG recipients are also entitled to the subsidy, amounting to 230 euros, if they received BAföG for at least one month between 1st October 2021 and 31st March 2022 and do not live with their parents.

If this applies to you, you don’t need to specifically apply for the subsidy. You will be paid it automatically. The Munich Student Union is currently working on the exact technical procedures. Please understand that for this reason we can’t yet give you a fixed date, at which the heating cost subsidy will be on your account.

You can have a look at the (German) wording of the law here.

All information regarding BAföG can be found here (also in German).
