What is the 9-Euro-Ticket?

After the law regarding the planned 9-Euro-Ticket first passed Germany’s Bundestag, it has now also passed the Bundesrat. That means that all citizens will be able to use local public transport as well as regional trains in the whole of Germany for nine euros a month in June, July and August 2022. The 9-Euro-Ticket will be valid for buses, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and regional trains, but not for long-distance trains. Starting Monday, 23rd May 2022, the tickets can already be purchased online or at the ticket machines.

Do we students additionally need to buy the 9-Euro-Ticket?

No, you don’t. In June, July and August, your validated student ID with the MVV logo will serve as 9-Euro-Ticket. Students who can show this student ID do not have to buy an additional 9-Euro-Ticket.

How will the 9-Euro-Ticket be set off against the already paid solidarity fee?

The solidarity fee will be repaid automatically by reducing the solidarity fee for the winter semester 2022/23. The solidarity fee will be reduced by 9 euros that semester, from 72 euros to 63 euros. Students will receive this reduction automatically.

The 9-euro reduction for the next winter semester results from students having paid 72 euros for the solidarity fee covering 6 months, i.e. 12 euros a month. In June, July and August, when it is possible to obtain a 9-Euro-Ticket, students would have thus paid 3 euros a month too much. These three months are added, resulting in the next winter semester’s solidarity fee being reduced by altogether 9 euros.

Will students who are going to graduate in the summer semester 2022 also receive a refund?

Unfortunately, students who don’t re-register with their university for the winter semester 2022/23 will not receive the 9-euro refund. The solidarity fee is basically a financing model built on solidarity, in this case financing first-year students of the winter semester 2022/23 from the students graduating in the summer semester 2022. This decision applies for the whole of Bavaria. It was made by the Ministry for Science and the Arts and co-ordinated with all the universities, the student representation Landesastenkonferenz (LAK) as well as with the Studentenwerke.

What about students who additionally purchased the ticket IsarCard Semester?

The Munich Student Union and the “AK Mobilität” formed by the student representatives of the University of Applied Sciences Munich, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), along with the Munich Transport Association MVV as well as the transport services represented by it, have decided that all students who bought an IsarCard Semester for 209.30 euros for the summer semester 2022 will receive a refund amounting to 104.65 euros. That amounts to half the price.

How exactly the refunds will be made is currently being organized. So far, it is known that the refunds will be carried out in the summer semester 2022 via an online form. Students will presumably have to apply for a refund with the transport company with which they purchased their ticket, i.e. the MVG, S-Bahn and so on. Please be aware of the fact that this refund only applies to the additional ticket “IsarCard Semester”.

Where can I find more information?
