100 Rooms in our Halls of Residence to Celebrate our 100th Anniversary

In the summer semester of 2020, thousands of students will once again be starting their first semester at a university in Munich or the surrounding area. The Munich Student Union wants to offer first-year students the opportunity to get an inexpensive room right in time for the start of the semester. Because of the fact that the Munich Student Union will be celebrating its 100th anniversary on 30.03.2020, it is raffling 100 extra rooms exclusively for first-semester students who are not from Munich – in addition to the 200 rooms raffled every year.

On 29th January 2020, Bernd Sibler, the Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts, randomly selected the lucky winners. The winners have already been informed by email and will be able to move into a room in a hall of residence on 01.04.2020. All they need to do now is to accept the offer by a certain date and hand in proof of their student status.

Dr. Ursula Wurzer-Faßnacht, Director of the Munich Student Union, was happy to carry out the raffle in celebration of the anniversary: “It has been 100 years since our predecessor, the organisation “Studentenhaus München”, was founded and at the same time created the first halls of residence. I am happy to continue this long-standing tradition and to help 100 first-year students to receive a room for the summer semester with our special raffle carried out in our anniversary year.”

Creating affordable accommodation for students and thus further improving studying conditions in the entire Free State of Bavaria, is of great importance to Minister for Science Bernd Sibler: “The framework conditions for successfully completing your studies also especially include the question of accommodation. The student unions are important partners, advisors and intermediaries for students looking for affordable accommodation. The Free State supports them actively in creating this living space – in particular in areas with a high population density. The Munich Student Union, which offers the incredible number of roughly 11,000 rooms in 31 halls of residence, is making a considerable contribution to this."

Future students who will be enrolled at a Munich university for the first time in the summer semester were able to apply online until 15.01.2020 for one of the 100 rooms. They were able to name up to three halls of residence they would like to live in.
