Comparing national and international university rankings can also help you find the right university and course of study. There are a number of rankings that are published regularly by several different organisations. It is therefore important to pay attention to how up-to-date the particular ranking you are looking at is and whether or not the organisation providing it is reputable.

The Centre for Higher Education [Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung, CHE] operated by the Bertelsmann Stiftung carries out rankings on a regular basis – recently, in cooperation with the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT – and also explains on its website the applied methods. But there are also some political and business magazines which establish their own rankings, such as the Times (Times Higher Education Ranking) or DER SPIEGEL.

The TU Berlin offers an overview of national, European and international rankings; an overview of international rankings can be found here: www.universityrankings.ch/en.

Amongst the international rankings, there are also the well-known QS World University Rankings. The Jiao Tong University (Shanghai) provides a ranking to establish the top 500 universities around the world, called Academic Ranking of World Universities. We strongly recommend to take a good look at the methodology applied with this (or any) ranking in order to make sure that the results presented are relevant to your decision.
