In Germany, there are several types of universities with different objectives and emphases in research, training and education, as described in the Framework Act for Higher Education of the Federal Republic of Germany [Hochschulrahmengesetz]. However, the individual Länder often distinguish between the different types of universities in their individual university laws and lay down their functions.
In general, you can distinguish between the following types of universities:
- universities and technical universities
- universities of applied sciences
- universities of art and music
- universities of education
- ecclesiastical universities
- private universities
