After the unambiguous results of the student ballot on December 2012, the MVV (Munich City Public Transport Network) Semester-Ticket was introduced for the first time in the 2013/2014 winter semester. After a pilot phase and a new vote in November 2016, the Semester-Ticket is now being introduced to regular operation as of the summer semester 2017. In accordance with Bavarian university regulations, the Munich Student Union is responsible for implementing the Semester-Tickets and negotiating contracts with the agencies responsible for public transport utilities in the various districts of Munich.

In principle, all students in Munich are entitled to a Semester-Ticket so long as their university or college is a participant of the pilot project. The following institutions are included as of the summer semester 2017:

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München
(Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich)

Technische Universität München
(Technical University of Munich),
with exception of the departments in Straubing and Singapore

Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften München – Hochschule München
(Munich University of Applied Sciences – Munich University)

Katholische Stiftungshochschule, Abteilung München
(Catholic Foundation College, Munich department)

Hochschule für Musik und Theater München
(University of Music and Performing Arts Munich)

Akademie der Bildenden Künste München
(Academy of Fine Arts, Munich)

Hochschule für Angewandte Sprachen/Fachhochschule des SDI München
(University of Applied Languages/College of the SDI Munich)

Hochschule für Philosophie München
(Munich School of Philosophy)

Hochschule für Politik München
(Munich School of Political Science)

Hochschule Weihenstephan-Triesdorf
(Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Science),
with exception of the department in Triesdorf

Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München (starting summer semester 2018)

Further universities may participate in the project upon internal consultation. However, implementation of the ticket requires a time frame of at least 12 months, and new Semester-Tickets can only be introduced at the beginning of a new summer semester.

The MVV Semester-Ticket

The MVV Semester-Ticket consists of two parts: a mandatory solidarity fee paid by all students attending the participating universities, which permits the use of student ID as validation for MVV services within the defined time periods, and the “IsarCard Semester” ticket, an optional purchase at MVV machines and ticket outlets, which entitles the student to unlimited use of the entire MVV network at all times of day throughout the corresponding semester.

Further information on the history and concept of the Munich Semester-Ticket can be found at:

The Solidarity Fee

In the winter semester 2017/18, the for all students mandatory solidarity fee for the MVV Semester-Ticket will be EUR 66.50 and EUR 67.40 in the summer semester 2018. This entitles students to travel in the MVV network with their student ID at the following times:

  • Monday to Friday between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am on the following day

  • At all times on Saturdays, Sundays and on public holidays

The validation applies to second class travel within the entire MVV network and to all modes of MVV transport (S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, bus and authorised regional trains).

The solidarity fee is collected by the universities

Exemption from this fee can only be applied for in the case of severely handicapped persons in possession of a pass entitling them to free public travel (including the corresponding certification by the Munich Office for Family and Social Services).

If you have any questions regarding the charges of the solidarity fee or the issuing of a student ID card that can be used as an MVV ticket as explained above, please contact the university you are matriculating or re-registering to. Here you can find the current “statute of the Munich Student Union concerning an additional monetary contribution for the access of students to local public transport” as pfd for view. Note: the official publication of this draft of the statute at the universities renders the statute effective in accordance with § 7.

The IsarCard Semester

The IsarCard Semester is an optional purchase that is valid for one semester and entitles its holder to unlimited second-class travel within the entire MVV network and access to all modes of MVV transport (S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, bus and authorised regional trains).

The IsarCard Semester for the winter semester 2017/18 costs EUR 193.00 and EUR 195.70 in the summer semester 2018. It can be purchased at the MVG ticket machines, machines at the S-Bahn stations, the customer service center, the private ticket outlets of the MVV and BOB, and in the MVV regional buses. The IsarCard Semester is valid as a ticket and available every semester, two tickets covering an entire year of transportation. The IsarCard Semester is only valid if presented together with valid student ID containing the MVV logo. It can no longer be returned after the beginning of the semester (e.g. following de-registration).

Attention! Important information for students attending Munich University of Applied Sciences:

When purchasing the IsarCard Semester at a ticket machine, all students of the Munich University of Applied Sciences are required to - instead of their matriculation number - enter the 11-digit card number on the back of their student ID.

Upon accidental entry of the matriculation number or the 6-digit number on the front of your student ID, the ticket will be printed despite being invalid!

In case of a mistyped number, the ticket can be exchanged at the following locations depending on where it was purchased:

  • MVG machine (ticket and receipt both have the MVG logo, blue machines):
Exchange at MVG customer service center Poccistrasse or Marienplatz
  • DB machine (ticket and receipt have the DB logo, red machines):
Exchange at the S-Bahn Service Center Munich or at Munich Central Station

Should your student ID have been replaced by the University e.g. due to a technical defect, its 11-digit card number will also change. This will lead to your existing IsarCard Semester ticket becoming invalid. The IsarCard Semester ticket must therefore be exchanged immediately. For this, please personally refer to a service center of the MVV transport association for a free replacement of your IsarCard Semester ticket. Next to your ticket, a confirmation of your ID replacement by the university will be required.

Further tips:

Be sure to hold onto both your ticket and the receipt. Store the receipt carefully and separately from the ticket, as it will be required as proof of purchase in the event of losing your ticket. A one-time re-issue in case of loss will be granted in exchange for the receipt and an administration fee.

Please remember not to laminate your IsarCard Semester-Ticket, as it may affect the cards readability. Sleeves for the IsarCard Semester-Tickets will soon be available at the MVV outlets and in other shops.

If you should lose your IsarCard Semester-Ticket, please enquire at the central collection point. For all universities, this is the reception area of the Studentenhaus at Leopoldstrasse 15. Should you have found a lost ticket or a receipt, you may also hand it in here. (U3/U6 Giselastrasse, red entrance next to the "Schweinchenbau").

Further information on the purchase of IsarCard Semester and its associated tariffs is available on the website of the Munich Public Transport Network
