Canteen fish from certified sustainable fisheries

According to figures issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO), approximately 85% of the world’s fish stocks are being driven to their limits by commercial and non-commercial overfishing. The Munich Student Union is aware of its responsibility towards ensuring a sustainable fishing industry and offers its students an environmentally conscious alternative: Since December, fish from sustainable fisheries has been on the menu in our canteens and cafeterias. The traceability of the fish we use is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

The MSC is a non-profit making environmental organisation, whose gaol is to promote conservation of the world’s fish stocks and maintenance of the diversity of the oceans. The MSC seal is the world’s most widely recognised assurance that fish and seafood products are derived from sustainable fisheries. The MSC seal is awarded to fishing companies that not only take adequate measures to ensure that there is plenty of fish left in the future, but also protect marine mammals and birds, as well as promoting and maintaining the diversity of the oceans.  If one of our products bears the MSC seal, then it originates from a fishery that independently complies with the guidelines of the MSC and has been certified as sustainable.

Additional information concerning the MSC and other certifications held by the Munich Student Union is available here.
