If neither you yourself, your parents nor your husband/wife are able to cover the costs of your studies, you may be eligible for a BAföG grant. BAföG stands for Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (Federal Education and Trainings Assistance Act for university students) and represents an educational maintenance grant, which primarily funded by the government but administrated and distributed by Studentenwerke (student unions).
Whether or not you are eligible for BAföG, and how much assistance you will receive, is dependent upon several factors: Your parents' income for example, your marital status the number of siblings you have.
