Munich canal system - Munich's 'underworld'
Most of us in Munich are unaware of the network of canals and rainwater catchment basins that exists beneath the very ground on which we walk. Such a network represents a vital component of a functional drinking water supply and waste water treatment system. We are generally not aware of these canals and basins because they are all inaccessible. For example, who knows that there is a reservoir beneath the Fröttmaninger primary school, with the dimensions of a cathedral? Your tour guide will explain the history and development of the waste water treatment system in Munich and enlighten you as to the everyday tasks of the canal workers.
This tour lends participants an impression of the underground network, as they by accompany the 'canaler' - a flickering storm lantern in his hand and a wealth of stories in his head - though a section of canal and into a rainwater overflow reservoir. The tour begins in the North Graveyard (Nord Friedhof).
