Semester ticket

As a result of the unambiguous student vote in December 2012, an MVV (Munich City Public Transport Network) semester ticket was introduced at the beginning of the 2013/2014 winter semester.  In accordance with Bavarian university regulations, the Munich Student Union is responsible for implementing the semester tickets and negotiating contracts with the agencies responsible for public transport utilities in the various Munich districts.

In principle, all students of the Munich universities and colleges participating in this pilot project are entitled to a semester ticket. This currently includes the following institutions:

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Munich Ludwig Maximilians University)

Technische Universität München (Munich Technical University),
with the exception of the departments in Straubing and Singapore

Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften München (Hochschule München, Munich University of Applied Sciences)

Hochschule für Musik und Theater München (Munich University of Music and Theatrical Arts)

Katholische Stiftungsfachhochschule, Abteilung München (Caltholic Trust University of Applied Sciences, Munich department)

Akademie der Bildenden Künste München (Munich Academy of Fine Art)

Hochschule für Angewandte Sprachen/Fachhochschule des SDI München (Munich SDI University of Applied Languages)

Hochschule für Philosophie München (Munich School of Philosophy)

Hochschule für Politik München (Munich School of Political Science)

Hochschule Weihenstephan-Triesdorf (Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences), with the exception of the Triesdorf department.

Upon internal agreement, additional universities can join the project. However, a period of at least twelve months is required to implement new terms and the semester ticket always runs from the start of the summer semester.

The MVV semester ticket

The MVV semester ticket comprises 1. a solidarity contribution that has to be paid by all students of participating universities, which permits students in possession of their student ID to use MVV services within defined time periods and 2. the “IsarCard Semester“ travel card which can be optionally purchased by students at MVV machines and ticket outlets and entitles holders to make unlimited use of the entire MVV network, at all times of day, during the corresponding semester.

Further information concerning the development of the Munich semester ticket and the model upon which the concept is based is available at:

The solidarity contribution

All students are required to pay the MVV semester ticket solidarity contribution of €66,50 per semester. With their student ID, this entitles students to travel on the MVV network at the following times:

  • Monday to Friday between 18.00 hours and 06.00 hours the following day

  • Saturday, Sunday and public holidays at all times

The semester ticket is valid for second class travel within the entire MVV network, on all forms of MVV transport (S trains, U trains, trams, busses and certain regional trains).

Solidarity contributions are collected by the universities

The solidarity contribution is to be paid by all students. Only seriously handicapped students who are in possession of a pass entitling them to free MVV travel (certified by the Munich Office for Family and Social Services) can apply for exemption.

For answers to your questions regarding payment of the solidarity contribution or issue of a student ID card—which acts as an MVV ticket, as explained above—please contact the university at which you will matriculate or return to. More detailed information is available on the websites of the individual institutions:

Here you can download a pdf comprising the section of the Munich Student Union constitution dealing with the additional contribution for student travel on public transport. In accordance with §7, compliance with the legally recognised version of the universities' constitutional regulations alone is binding.

The IsarCard semester

Students also have the option of purchasing the IsarCard semester. This entitles holders to unlimited travel within the MVV network without time restrictions during the corresponding semester. It is valid for second class travel on all forms of MVV transport (S trains, U trains, trams, busses and certain regional trains).

The IsarCard semester costs €193,00 and is available at MVG machines, machines at suburban train (S-Bahn) stations, the customer service center and the private MVV and BOB ticket outlets, as well as in MVV regional buses. The IsarCard semester is valid from October 2013, from which point on it will be continually available, such that two IsarCard semester tickets per year will cover the entire year.

Important information for students of the Munich University of Applied Sciences:

Upon purchase of the IsarCard semester from a ticket machine, all students of the Munich University of Applied Sciences are required to enter the 11-digit card number on the back of their student ID (and not their matriculation number).

Upon accidental entry of matriculation number or the 6-digit number on the front of your student ID, the ticket will be printed but is invalid!

Where an invalid ticket can be exchanged depends on where it was purchased:

  • MVG machine (ticket and receipt have the MVG logo, blue machines):
Exchange at the MVG customer service centers in Poccistrasse or on Marienplatz
  • DB machine (ticket and receipt have the DB logo, red machines):
Exchange at the S Bahn customer service centers in Munich or Munich Central Station (“Hauptbahnhof”)

Further tips:

Be sure to take both your ticket and the receipt with you. Store the receipt carefully and separately from the ticket, as proof of purchase in the event of losing your ticket.

Do not laminate your IsarCard semester ticket as this may affect the cards readability. Sleeves for the IsarCard semester tickets will soon be available at MVV outlets and in other shops.

If you lose your IsarCard semester ticket, please enquire at the central collection point. This has been established for all universities in the lodge of the Studentenhaus at 15 Leopoldstrasse. If you find a ticket or a receipt, please also hand it in here (U3/U6 Giselastrasse, red entrance next to the "Schweinchenbau").

Further information concerning the IsarCard semester and associated tarifs is available on the Munich City Public Transport Network website under
